Turning in a Stray

If you found the animal in Oceanside or Vista, you may bring the animal to us. Be prepared to provide the location found and a picture ID.

Getting Updates

You will be given a reference number that you can call to see how the animal is doing while at the shelter.

Acting Responsibly

Do not feel badly that you cannot keep the animal; you are doing the responsible thing by keeping it off the street and away from cars and other dangers.

Found a Stray?

If you would like to report a stray for capture and are not currently housing it, please contact our animal control dispatch. The following are a few tips for housing a stray temporarily.

File a Report

If you find the animal in Oceanside or Vista, contact us and file a found report. It is also recommended that you contact other area shelters to file a report with them.

Spread the Word

Call the local newspapers to place an advertisement. Be careful to give only very general information on the dog.

Make flyers to post in the neighborhood or area where you first found the animal.

Responding to Calls

When someone responds to your ad, ask them to provide detailed information that was not listed in the ad that only an owner would know. Ask them to bring a photo of the animal as well.

It is very important that you DO NOT give the animal away for free. This will discourage individuals who may have poor intentions for the animal's care from responding.
