Special Needs Pets

Just as lovable as all the rest, we occasionally need to find loving homes for pets with special needs. These animals might be deaf or blind or have a physical disability or require special dietary or medical needs.

If you think you have what it takes to give one of these special needs animals a happy life, we'd love to hear from you.

Sweet, Soft & Lovable Gypsy Needs a Forever Home

Gypsy came to the Oceanside Humane Society in bad shape a few months ago. She was picked up as a stray, half starved, weak, scared, with most of her hair missing (probably due to near starvation) and sores on her skin. Yet, she had a really sweet, even sassy streak.  When she got kennel cough on top of everything else, her outlook was grim.

To help her recover, she has been in foster care for several weeks now and has made tremendous strides:  she has gained weight, her skin condition has cleared up completely, her hair has grown back, she is house trained and is a real joy to have around.

She is used to being inside whenever her foster mom is home, quietly sleeps through the night on her own doggie bed in the bedroom, likes to play with soft stuffed toys and balls, and loves to take short walks. She is very affectionate and well adjusted. She enjoys car rides and is well behaved in the back seat.  When you open the front door, she does not try to run off, but stays close by. She comes when whistled or called for. Gypsy learns quickly and tries to please.  She does not get on the furniture.  She has never chewed on anything but her own toys!  Best of all, she is not a barker.  She is very quiet and easy to have around.  When her foster mom is not home, she stays in the garage and back yard and behaves well there.  No barking, no digging, no chewing.  While she is estimated to be about 3-5 years old, she very much looks like a puppy.  She has soft black fur, weighs 40-45 pounds and is spayed.

Gypsy has a minor permanent disability:  her hind legs are stiff and weak. What that means in practical terms is that she can’t jump and can’t walk more than maybe half a mile.  It appears that she will live well and fully with this disability. She is not in pain and seems to enjoy being active in her own way.

She would be a perfect dog for a person who is home a lot of the time. Gypsy likes lots of companionship, but doesn’t need much walking or play time. Like most dogs, she spends great parts of the day simply snoozing. Gypsy appears to want to chase and play with cats, so maybe that is not a good match.  While she is a little shy in new situations, she is very friendly.  She may be ok with other small dogs, but they would have to meet first.  She wants to be dominant with other animals and does not want to share her stuff.  She comes complete with her own doggie bed and toys, leash and food bowl.  You can come meet Gypsy first at her foster home in Oceanside and would then go through the adoption process with the Oceanside Humane Society.

Gypsy’s adoption cost is only $50 (including recent spaying) and seniors over 60 would receive a $50 senior discount making Gypsy free!
